Did you know that September is Responsible Pet Owner Month? This is the month that pet owners are urged to get their pets spayed and neutered. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that six to eight million cats and dogs end up in animal shelters every year. Please spay or neuter your pet and discover what you can do to take part in Responsible Pet Owner Month.
Here are just a few more things that a responsible pet owner can do for thier pets to keep them safe and happy.
- Get your dog neutered or spayed as soon as they have become old enough.
- Always keep your pet on a leash in public.
- Feed your pet healthy food and always make sure to provide clean water.
- Clean water and food bowls daily.
- When traveling in a car with your dog, take breaks and let the dog stretch and walk.
- Never leave your dog unattended in a car.
- Make sure your backyard is secure when leaving your dog outside, check for places where animals can get in or the dog and get out and fix them.
- Visit the vet no less than once per year
- Brush your dog regularly and inspect for fleas/ticks.
- Obedience train your dog, teach them basic commands for your safety and thiers.
- Have chew toys and playthings for your dog.
- Bathe your dog when necessary.
- Walk your dog at daily to physically and mentally exercise them.
- Pick up after your dog’s feces, don’t let the dog have the chance to clean up the yard for you.
